Thanks for this introduction, Youssef! I didn't know his work, but I see how it transcends the usual categories of 'documentary' or 'street'. Great example of how things are rarely black & white (even if they are😉).
Indeed! I’m one of those who don’t know Gilles Peress. Not afraid of saying it because there are so many (very) good photographers that one doesn’t know about. That’s why it is important that there are people like you around to spread the word and the knowledge. There’s nothing wrong in not knowing but there is something wrong in knowing and don’t want to pass the knowledge to other people.
Thank you for having introduced me to Peress.
Definitely a great photographer to discover. The two last photos from Bosnia have struck me. It is difficult to put words into war photography. Images say more than a thousand words and it is true.
Peress makes me think of D. McCullin. One of the greatest too.
There's nothing wrong in not knowing of course! That's the idea of the series :) (and the whole newsletter really is about sharing what I learn about photography)
I don't know D. McCullin but will check him out :)
Such a cool one. I love his photography style. There’s something really striking about the composition in the Iran ones you chose. Thank you for sharing your deep analysis of these works, very fun to learn :)
Poweful images! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for reading :)
Goodness, these images are incredible. Thanks for sharing.
They are quite powerful indeed :)
Excellently written. The series is a joy to read.
Thank you Frank! Much appreciated
Very moving and meaningful!
Amazing images, thankyou for this!
I didn't know Gilles Peress but I'm very glad that I do now. Thank you for that.

In the no man's land as he says :)
Thank you for bringing his beautiful photographs to light. 🙌

Great post, Youssef. I try to get my hands on his book Telex for a number of years.
Thanks Marcel! Yes I think his books aren't easy to find
👍
Oh, yes, there’s whoever made the photograph, the subject, and whoever is viewing the photograph. At least.
Indeed and they don't always see the same thing
