Because my interest in dreamwork, I see symbols. And symbols can be both personal or tribal. For example, we may recognize a heart shape (the doodle or the anatomical human heart shape) -- but our feeling might be different if we're in love, grieving or ill.
A good photo to me is not overdetermined -- it has within in tensions ---but also carries a transcendence -- a suggestion for healing -- a call for attention.
Perhaps a photo can offer a character (a shape) and a setting and the viewer imagines the plot. I wonder if we imagine stories because we are looking for pattern -recognition on a basic level of love or fear ..... danger or welcome/belonging?
Agree! The photo provides some context or idea and the rest is filed by the viewer. That's why I am questioning whether it's the photo telling a story or the viewer creating one
Perhaps also there's the intention of photographer -- is it editorial or fine art? Is the intention --- messaging / communication or subconscious processing/ mystery ? The photo may be evidence of the photographers POV. (or if AI - the culture of the inputs). But what if a photographer is photographing messaging that they don't understand -- but are trying to bring consciousness to it?
Interesting article, one that makes you think. I heard that story thing several times but in a specific context with a specific aim. If you dive into more artistic nature photography work no one talks about that but more about expression, emotion, reflecting one self in the images. I guess that the best is to acknowledge what there is, reflect upon it and move on if one does not necessarily identify with it.
Agreed! Expression, emotion, and reflecting one self in the images resonates with me more. Ultimately I think all those aim to make you think about intention

That explains why different people interpret the same photo differently.
